That’s one of those new unsealed units for better ventilation. It really helps keep the anodes and cathodes fresh

Semi-related: When I was a young lad, I had a 12v air pump I used to fill balls and bike tires. It plugged into a cigarette lighter and it worked okay. One day, the plug got smooshed and rendered my pump useless. But wait! I saw a quick-crimp lamp cord plug in dad’s tool box- I can pop that on in place of the lighter plug and be back in business lickity split! There was smoke... So much smoke. I learned a neat lesson about the differences in 12v DC and 110v AC that day, and my pump never pumped again.

My colleague had that kind of accident years ago at work. He got a small permanent blind spot in one eye in the center of his vision. Apparently quite annoying.
